Small Things Book Club

Curling up with a kitten, some malbec, and a good book a perfect way to end a Sunday evening.

Hence, this first edition of the Small Things Book Club! Hooray!

The Dog Stars is a story about post-plague America around 2040 or so. The world suffers a combination of a deadly flu epidemic and a new, unclassified virus referred to as "the blood disease," and all who seem to be left are Hig, and his trigger-happy companion, Bangley. Considering much of the world has been wiped out, this novel is most told in the stream-of-consciousness style, but I loved being in Hig's head. He and his partner protect their territory through Bangley's thoughtful, tactical processes, and Hig's skills as a pilot. However, after a traumatic incident, Hig leaves the safety of their territory and finds himself with no fuel and no partner, staring down the barrel of a rifle.
This is a fantastic story that reminded me what is important in life, and for those like my mother it has a happy ending!

The fault in our stars is a beautiful story about a teenaged girl coping with terminal cancer. It's no Lifetime network special though; This girl is sass and sarcasm through and through. She is extremely smart and her boyfriend (who she met in a support group) is more thoughtful than Noah Calhoun. Their relationship blossoms over their mutual love for reading, and her favorite book takes them on a trip of a lifetime. This one's a cryer for sure, but it's also got a suspense factor to it. I tore through it in a week.

My last recommendation is for The Song of Achilles. I am a sucker for Greek mythology and it was a great historical fiction read.
But it was an even better romance story.
The love affair betwixt the reserved Patroclus and the beautiful, strong Achilles full of sexual tension, desire, and touching sentiment. The book spans the life of Achilles, much of which was during the Trojan War. There are many ups and downs, moments of selfishness and moments of tenderness that  make it a sort of Notebook-like book experience. I wholly recommend it for those that are into a really rockin love story instead of Fifty Shades.

Thats all for now!
Stop yer pinning for one hour and read something delightful (and send it to me, I want to hear your good reads.)
